Hypatia of Alexandria

She was a mathematician, philosopher and the daughter of Theon Alexandricus, the last librarian of the Alexandria Library in the Museum of Alexandria. She was educated at Athens and in Italy; at about 400 AD, she became headmistress of the Platonist school at Alexandria, where she imparted the knowledge of Plato and Aristotle, to any student; the pupils included pagans, christians, and foreigners.

Shades of Gray

The Helix Nebula is a trillion-mile-long cloud of hot gases." At its center is dying star which has ejected masses of dust and gas to form tentacle-like filaments stretching toward an outer rim composed of the same material. Our own sun may look like this in several billion years.

Taking pictures with the Hubble Space Telescope is much more complex than taking pictures with a traditional camera. Hubble's cameras record light from the universe with special electronic detectors. These detectors produce images of the cosmos not in color, but in shades of black and white.

Seven Days a Week

Did you ever wonder why we have seven days in a week? As it turns out the seven day week is based on the moon and not the sun. There are 29 days to the moons cycle which breaks down into 4 seven day periods with 1 day of what is called a New Moon (also called the Dark Moon) and is not visible as there is no sun light is being reflected to earth from its surface.

Lucky Seven

The number seven has a long history of mystical and religious associations: Seven Sleepers, Seven Ages of Man, Seven Wonders of Ancient Greece, Seventh Son of the Seventh Son, Seven Sisters and Seven Days Week.

In math and science seven is a prime number, a seven-sided shape is a heptagon, and there are seven types of catastrophes. There are seven colors of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

The Seven Sisters of the Pleiades

The Pleiades, located more than 400 light-years away in the Taurus constellation, are the subject of many legends and writings throughout the world. Greek mythology holds that the great hunter Orion saw the Pleiads as they walked through the Boeotian countryside, and fancied them. He pursued them for seven years, until Zeus answered their prayers for delivery and transformed them into doves placing them among the stars. Later on, when Orion was killed, he was placed in the heavens behind the Pleiades, immortalizing the chase.

Homo Erectus Pekinensis

No it is not what you think silly, get your mind out of the gutter and let’s take a journey back in our evolutionary history of about 700,000 years ago to a cave just outside of what is now called Beijing (written 'Peking' before the adoption of the Pinyin romanization system), China. This is where the last of the Homo Erectus made their stand against the forces of nature. A battle which they eventually lost.
